With a bit of coaching, children can do some really, really good push-ups.
I know this because of Karleen - after only a few days at UpLifted, she already had her nieces doing push-ups on the floor of her living room.
There she was, hardly done with her first week, coaching her nieces into perfect push-up position and encouraging them with some of the highest energy I’ve ever seen.
It was clear that change in Karleen’s house was imminent.
“One of the things that's really interesting is I feel like we put so much energy into our careers and our relationships and our all of that stuff, but all that stuff starts with your health, you know?”
Often times, we start exercising, watching what we eat, and taking supplements because we’re tired of weighing X and we think that we’ll finally be happy when we weight Y. Losing weight is attached to our ability to be happy, or so we think, and all of our decisions around health revolve around that.
It’s a vicious cycle that leads to us searching for the quickest fix possible - and never actually getting to the root of the problem.
For Karleen, that meant trying short-term solutions like Herbalife supplements, and all of the usual suspects as a means to kickstart a healthy lifestyle.
But, like any short-term fix, the results wouldn’t stick and neither would the habit.
Obviously things have changed a lot since Karleen started her 8 Week Transformation. She’s now an avid hiker, 5k runner (I’d also like to mention that she shaved 5 minutes off of her time so far) and she’s down 18 lbs!
Long story short, she’s finally experiencing a level of freedom to live her life that her health had previously gotten in the way of…
But what happened? How was she able to flip the switch and shift from inconsistent to in-shape?
“I can make as many excuses as I want, but I still am making that decision to put certain things into my body. [It's about] taking ownership of stuff.”
The inconvenient truth is that nothing will change until we express total ownership over our health.
That means you and only you put food into your mouth.
You and only you can go for a run and reap the rewards.
You and only you can join a gym.
But that doesn’t mean that you have to go at it alone.
Karleen’s success is built on the fact that she created or joined teams wherever she went. Whether it was finding a running team to join when she wanted to run her first 5k, joining our Fit Foodie group, and high-fiving everyone and their momma during a tough workout.
At first, it’ll be uncomfortable. Just ask Karleen.
“I would say that at the end of the day, only you can make this happen. You have to make the decision for yourself if you really want results, it's not going to be easy, but you have to start somewhere.
I would say that ... I don't know, I think just go in with the mindset that you're going to finish no matter what. Take it one routine at a time.
Don't worry about what the next set is, don't worry about what that is, just be in whatever moment that you're in and one hour is not going to kill you. You can do anything for one hour.”
But once you push through the first few weeks, something magical happens - here at UpLifted we call it the ‘Butterfly Effect’ and it’s a concept that we took from Chaos Theory.
In Chaos Theory, the Butterfly Effect is the theory that a small cause has a large effect. Such as a butterfly flapping it’s wings, and that small ripple of air slowly growing stronger and stronger before becoming a full-fledged hurricane.
For us, it’s watching someone’s transformation begin to transform others.
For Karleen, it was watching her nieces choose water over juice boxes, snack on vegetables, and do push-ups on her living room floor.
Here’s to transforming ourselves and the next generation.
We are very proud of you, Karleen!
